Introduction to open-source hosting with MacStadium
MacStadium’s Free and Open-Source Software (FOSS) program provides free access to a Mac mini hosted in one of our US or European data centers for the development and hosting of open-source projects. We currently sponsor over 100 projects, including Pi Stats, enabling continued support for open-source software in the Apple ecosystem.

What is Pi Stats?
Get Pi-hole data right in your pocket with Pi Stats for macOS and iOS.
If you have a Raspberry Pi, chances are you’ve heard of Pi-hole. Pi-hole provides network-wide ad blocking via Linux hardware. Pi Stats is an open-source project designed to simplify network management and allows you to effortlessly monitor and manage your Pi-holes.
On macOS, Pi Stats lives in your menu bar, providing quick access to essential controls and status updates. On iPhone, it offers unparalleled flexibility, enabling you to check performance, enable or disable Pi-holes, and dive deeper into system metrics with Pi Monitor, an added service that needs to be installed on your Raspberry Pi.

Seamless integration between macOS and iOS makes setup a breeze. Simply scan the QR code generated by Pi Stats for macOS to sync your devices.
Pi Stats all started with Fernando Bunn, Lead Developer of Pi Stats, wanted to occasionally stop Pi-hole from running to access specific sites being blocked without adding them to the allow list. He also wanted to learn how to create widgets, which were brand new to iOS at the time. After releasing the iOS version, he started to miss having it on macOS. And then Pi Stats was born.
“I enjoy being able to check my Pi-hole instances from my phone and having the ability to stop them temporarily if a website has issues with the custom DNS,” said Bunn. “It also provides cool stats about my Raspberry Pi hardware, like temperature and uptime for example. It's very nerdy, but I love it!”
How Pi Stats uses MacStadium Mac hardware
Pi Stats uses a MacStadium Mac mini to run beta builds as a build machine, and to host instances of Pi-hole.
“The MacStadium machine is essential for Pi Stats’ development,” said Bunn. “This setup allows me to send tests to Apple without needing dedicated machines in my office.”

What’s next for Pi Stats?
Next in the pipeline for Pi Stats is working to update the project based on recent changes to Pi-hole, such as redesigning and refactoring Pi Stats to ensure compatibility with the latest version of Pi-hole.
Bunn is also working on some new and upcoming projects in the iOS app world. “I recently released Tintopia, a privacy-focused color wallpaper mesh app,” said Bunn. “I also hope to find time to work on UTMBeGone and update it with new features and iOS support.” said Bunn.
