Introduction

We've all been waiting for this one. Apple released their latest Mac mini model with M4 and M4 Pro that’s ‘more mighty’ and ‘more mini’ than ever before. Apple’s new Mac mini includes a major external redesign along with the powerful features of the M4 chip series.

Keep reading to dive into the details about the new M4 Mac mini.

All new Mac mini form factor

It’s been over 14 years since the last major external design change to the Mac mini. While many things have changed under the hood over the years, including the move to Apple silicon, the Mac mini’s exterior design has been more or less the same since 2010.

The first noticeable difference is the size. Mac mini with M4 measures at 5” x 5” x 2” (compared to the M2 model of 7.75” x 7.75” x 1.41”). The new Mac mini is slightly taller, but significantly smaller overall.

Despite its smaller size, the new mini retains a full set of I/O ports, with 10Gb Ethernet, HDMI, and 3x Thunderbolt ports on the back, and 2x USB-C and an audio jack on the front. Notably, the power button is now on the bottom of the new Mac mini, which may lead to some complexities when configuring the mini for server use.

M4 and M4 Pro chips

Jumping from M2 to M4, the new Mac mini packs a lot of power into the slim design.

Here’s a quick glance at M4’s specs:

  • 10 CPU cores
  • 10 GPU cores
  • 4 performance cores, 6 efficiency cores
  • Memory capacity and bandwidth - Up to 32 GB and 120GB/sec

Mac mini with M4 Pro

And here are the specs for M4 Pro:

  • Up to 14 CPU cores
  • Up to 20 GPU cores
  • 10 performance cores, 4 efficiency cores in the 14-core model
  • Memory capacity and bandwidth - Up to 64 GB and 273GB/sec

According to Apple, M4’s performance cores are the ‘world’s fastest CPU core’, offering the fastest single-thread performance on the market. This tracks with previous generations of Apple silicon, which offered very competitive single-core performance, even when compared to very high-end desktop PC chips with higher clock rates and power consumption.

Interestingly, the M4 Pro is not weighted as heavily towards efficiency cores compared to the M3 Pro chip, which had 6 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores. This indicates an emphasis on sustained high-performance workloads versus power efficiency, which is a great fit for desktop usage. Additionally, Apple claims that M4 Pro offers a 75% increase in memory bandwidth over M3 Pro, which should help it perform very well in AI/ML tasks.

Thunderbolt 5

Mac mini with M4 Pro supports Thunderbolt 5, which offers 120Gb/s of bandwidth, 3 times the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4. This extremely high bandwidth connectivity allows Mac mini to support up to 3 displays, in addition to future accessories.

New RAM allocations

Apple also announced dramatic changes to RAM allocations across the Mac mini line. Up from 8GB from Mac mini with M2, the latest Mac mini model now comes with 16GB RAM standard. Additionally, the Mac mini with M4 Pro now supports up to 64GB of RAM, a first for Mac mini with Apple silicon.
